Blogging has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade or so. I first forayed into blogging after a stint in the ecommerce world. I say a stint but I operated a very successful online store for around 3 years that reached up to $30K per month in revenue. It was a lot of fun but I was married to my work, working 60 hour weeks and neglecting my family. It was not a good fit for me. I saw a pin from this blogger who wrote about making $69K in one month blogging and I was sold.
Yes, I wanted to start a blog for the money. I admit it.
I always loved writing and I was what I considered an expert in a few different topics so I went full on in and created a blog.
So, what happened?
In month 1, I reached 10K monthly page views. A few months later, I was at 40K+ monthly page views, making $1,XXX per month with my tiny blog with no email list.
In month 9, I made $12K in one month from my blog.
And so today, what do I do?
I create and flip blogs (read more about my blog flipping journey here), run multiple sites, teach courses on blogging, website flipping, traffic generation and monetization, and freelance on the side doing some of my favorite hustles: social media management and copywriting.
So, here is your quick guide to blogging for dummies. This is the fast version for those who really wanna get up and get going with it.
My best advice is to JUST START!
No joke here. It will cost you money to begin, like most things, but the investment is minimal and really pays for itself and you will look back thinking this is one of the best things you’ve done for yourself. Here’s how you start!
How to Start a Money Making Blog
Step 1 is to pick your niche. Your niche is your blog topic. What are you gonna blog about? Wanna blog about what makes you happy or what makes you money. Can you have both? Sure. But, if your focus is to make money, pick one of these 7 profitable niches.
I have blogged on many topics..
- Nutrition and wellness
- Make money online
- Social media
- Personal finance and budgeting
Once you pick your niche, it’s time to get domain and hosting.
This is where your startup capital comes into play.
It’s a teeny investment. I make this investment over and over every time I start a new blog.
The good thing is, it’s cheap. At around $3.95/month you can get Bluehost hosting which includes FREE domain, SSL certificate and other perks.
There are 3 plans. I recommend the Basic plan. Feel free to go for the other 2 if you’d like.
Next, you’ll connect WordPress.
Then, you can start creating the blog. You’ll do things like pick a theme, add pages, write blog posts, etc.
For themes, we highly recommend Bluchic!
They offer really gorgeous feminine themes. You can check out their showcase too to see real blogs live to give you some inspiration.
So, by now you would have:
- Picked a niche (and named your blog)
- Bought hosting + domain and connected WordPress
- Gotten a theme
Write, write, write!
Lastly, you’ll add content. You will create your About page and talk about yourself, share your inspiration, why you started the blog, your mission and what you hope to accomplish. You can also add a resources page where you share your top tips, recommended tools, favorites, etc.
And of course, your blog posts. Write this way to get a huge bang and tons of traffic headed your way:
- Long form posts
- Use images
- Link internally and externally
- Monetize your posts
- Make it enjoyable to read
Long form posts are long posts. This means you should aim for 1,500+ words. The longer the better. Google likes long posts so your content will have a better chance of ranking if it’s long.
Use of images means add screenshots, stock photos, graphics, social media pics and more. You want to draw the reader in and help them stay on the page as long as possible. You do that with images!
Linking internally and externally helps with SEO (search engine optimization). SEO is the stuff that helps you get round in search engines. So when readers search for “how to bake a cake,” your cake baking tutorial comes up in the search results, just an example. Linking internally means you are placing links in your content that lead the reader to other places on your site (other blog posts, other pages, etc.). External links guide the reader away from the site to places like your social media pages, other blogs you mention, resources, etc.
Monetizing your posts is important if you wanna make money with your blog. Monetize with:
- Affiliate marketing
- Your own products
Affiliate marketing involves you earning a commission if the products you refer to customer result in a sale. So, if you refer an instant pot and a customer buys it, you earn a commission on the sale.
Ads make you money on the clicks the ads get. So, if you get 1,000 clicks a day, you earn money on every single click. Ads pay the least amount of money but they also require the least amount of work. You don’t have to convince customers to buy, sign up, leave their email address or anything, just click! And, you get paid. You can start with Google Adsense then move onto Mediavine (at 25,000 uniques) and Adthrive (at 100K+ page views).
With sponsorships, you connect with brands and get paid to talk about them on your blog. You can get paid to:
- Write a blog feature
- Do a social media blast
- Email your subsribers
- Film a demonstration
- Host a giveaway
- And, more!
With sponsorships, top influencers make $30K+ per sponsor! Starting out, you can expect to make $75 to $250 each, depending on many factors like the size of your audience, engagement, your negotiation skills, and other factors.
Lastly, your own products, which is by far the most lucrative. This blogger boasts about her $400K launches (ok, she doesn’t really boast but she has shared her success about it, check her out, she’s awesome). Can you imagine?
Your own products can be digital or physical products from, your own merchandise like apparel or coffee mugs to digital goods like ebooks, courses, printables, digital art, etc.
